Shared Decision Making Meetings In order to better prepare all students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century, the Commissioner of Education has set forth regulations requiring the participation of parents and teachers in school-based planning and shared decision making.
The purpose of shared decision making shall be to improve the educational performance of all students in the school, regardless of such factors as socioeconomic status, race, sex, language background, or disability.
The Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee meets once a month and minutes are taken at these meetings. Once the minutes are approved by the committee, they will be posted under the Publications and Forms tab. (We are in the process of creating a Shared Decision Making tab on the home page of this website.)
Budget Presentation Schedule As part of the budget process, there will be five different Budget Presentation Meetings. Each meeting will begin at 7:00 pm and will be held in the Home and Careers Room. The schedule is as follows.
Presentation #3 - February 23rd Presentation #4 - March 3rd Presentation #5 - March 11th
There will be specific topics discussed at each meeting. The complete list of topics is located under the Business Office tab.
Budget Presentation #2 which took place on February 4th, is currently being shown on Channel 22. For up to the minute show times, please visit www.shelterislandtown.us and click on the Channel 22 tab.
March 5, 2010 Deadline for Spring Sports Paperwork The deadline for Spring Sports Paperwork is March 5, 2010. If an athlete does not submit his/her paperwork to Nurse Mary by the deadline listed below, he/she will not be able to participate in a sport.
The Spring Sports that offered are:
-Junior High Girls Softball -Junior High Boys Baseball -High School Lacrosse (Ross Hosts) -High School Girls Softball (Ross Hosts) -Junior Varsity Baseball -Middle School and High School Sailing Club
All of the Athletic participation Forms are located under the Publications and Forms tab. Some of the forms are for your information and others must be filled out and returned. The forms that must be filled out and returned by March 5th are:
-Athletic Rules and Regulations Form -Participation Form -Medical History Form -Emergency Contact Form -Health Appraisal Form (only if a physical is needed)
Please note that the Travel Release Form does not have to be returned by the deadline. This form is to be used on a day-by-day basis during the season, only if your child in not riding the bus with the team.
For those students who wish to participate in the Middle School or High School Sailing Club, there are Sailing Club specific forms under the publications and forms tab.
All of the forms are also available at the front desk in the Main Lobby of the school.
Safety Event Hosted By Assemblyman Marc Alessi Assemblyman Marc Alessi is hosting an event for parents of elementary, middle school and high school students that will focus on safety. The event will take place on Thursday, February 25th, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, at the Riverhead Culinary Arts Center, located at 20 East Main Street in Riverhead. There will be three different presentations.

The Attorney General's Office will present vital internet safety info that will help parents have a conversation with their child about how to safely enjoy the digital world.

Parents for Megan's Law will present their "Apple of My Eye" program which teaches parents that they have the power to protect their children.

Parents Against Drug Dealing will give a presentation on what parents can do if they suspect their child is abusing drugs.

Shelter Island Yearbooks Are Now On Sale! The 2010 Edition of the Shelter Island Yearbook, Pogatticut is now on sale. The cost of a yearbook is $65.00. If you would like to order a copy of the yearbook, please send a check to Shelter Island School, Post Office Box 2015, Shelter Island, NY, 11964. Checks should be made payable to Shelter Island School. Please indicate "Yearbook" in the memo section of your check. Payment can also be dropped off in the Main Lobby of the school. If you have any questions, please contact the Yearbook Advisors, Robin Anderson, at extension 313 or Sharon Gibbs, at extension 200.
